Case 03: Avery Dennison, Cramlington

Avery Dennison - Fasson Roll Europe plant at Cramlington had the problem of 1970's flat roofs which had extensive repairs over the years. Multi-layers of built up felt were ineffective as weatherproofing and the woodfibre insulation provided little in insulation value.

Added to this was the highly flammable nature of the plant process which made naked flames on site potentially hazardous.

In conjunction with Anderson Waterproofing Systems, IMA Contractor, DW Tilley of Newcastle designed a system which avoided use of naked flames normally associated with built up felt systems.

The 12000 metre square roof was overlaid with Anderson Thermazone Insulation boards of 50mm in thickness, mechanically fixed through to the existing metal decking, providing an insulation to current standards and a level surface.

A waterproofing membrane of Anderson Rapide MF solo mineral surfaced was then mechanically fastened through to the existing decking. All laps and details were then sealed using the latest hot air welding technology avoiding the need for "naked flame" gas torches on site.

The 12000 metre square project was completed in a 12 week period without any interruptions to the clients process below.

Avery Dennison were so satisfied with the work that they have placed orders with DW Tilley to complete the remainder of their factory roofs in 2003.
