Case 09: Booker Cash & Carry, Gateshead

Booker Cash & Carry's premises on the Team Valley Trading Estate, Gateshead is a large portal frame building erected in the early 1970's.
It's original roof covering was a profiled aluminium sheet rivited to the steel purlins insulated with a glassfibre liner underneath.

For years the roof had been leaking around fixings and lap joints with the resultant water penetration to the floor below.

It had reached the stage in 2000 where apart from the water damage to stock, the resultant leaks were becoming a significant Health & Safety issue.

After discussions with Booker's technical department, DW Tilley of Newcastle put forward a scheme to overclad the building. Following a competitive tender process DW Tilley were awarded the contract for the roof covering and associated work to the 4000 metre square building.

The original roof covering which remained structurally sound was secured by fixing a galvanised steel Proclad bar on brackets through the aluminium roof to the existing steel purlins.

This then provided a new steel framework to support a new roof covering of Heys Shaw plastisol coated steel roof cladding, 0.7mm thickness.

The void between the two was filled with 100mm glassfibre insulation and covered with a breather membrane to avoid condensation build up.

The project was completed over the first 3 months of 2001 whilst the Cash & Carry continued trading without interruption.

The final result is a watertight roof with an increased insulation value at an economical cost.
