Case 06: Crewe Market Hall, Crewe

A major roof refurbishment project at Crewe Market Hall incorporated up to minute composite panel technology whilst retaining the building's traditional appearance.

The Borough of Crewe and Nantwich selected 1200 metres squared of 40mm thick composite roof panels in Merlin Grey. These replaced the original asbestos north light roof on this Grade 2 listed brick building, which was constructed as a Market Hall in 1890.

The original patent glazing to the north lights was replaced with Twinfix double skin polycarbonate glazing panels.

"We required a competitively priced, lightweight roofing system that was quick to install", said Norman Oxford, Principal Architect for the Borough of Crewe and Nantwich.

DW Tilley of Warrington, who acted as both main contractor and roofing contractor for the project, which also involved asbestos removal, redecoration and electrical rewiring.

DW Tilley Branch Manager, John Bailey, commented that the removal of the asbestos roof was complex and that the fast-track construction properties of the specified composite roof panels and the Twinfix glazing panels enabled the Market Hall to remain in use during the re-roofing works.

The project was completed on time and within budget.
