Case 04: Westburn Primary School, Westerhailes

The Westburn Primary School at Westerhailes, Edinburgh was a typical 1960's school building, with leaking flat roofs on different levels, internal rainwater pipes and a history of patch repairs and ineffective flat roofing solutions. The condition of the roof had reached a stage where it was seriously impeding the everyday running of the school.

The local authority City of Edinburgh Council to solve these problems once and for all with a "flat to pitch" conversion on the building, and a decision was made to carry out the work during the Spring and Summer of 2003.

With the existing structure unable to take a "superimposed load" to the main roof area, it was decided to use the "Cappella" system from Ward Building components. This transmits the weight of the new system onto the existing external walls.

After a tendering process DW Tilley of Whitburn, who are approved installers of the Cappella system were chosen by the City of Edinburgh to carry out the work.

The complete scheme was designed by Ward Building Components and DW Tilley, with the new roof being a composite roof panel of 40mm in thickness. All the new guttering is now on the exterior of the building with the rainwater flowing into a new drainage system.

The new school has now an aesthetically pleasing building with a roofing system which shall last for over 30 years before any maintenance is required.
